Acldity and compatibility of chromatic alginate impression materials and gypsum products

Abstract
This study was performed to assess the relation between compatibility and acidity of chromatic(color changing) alginate impression materials which have been introduced recently and gypsum products. 3 chromatic alginates(Chromaclone, Kromopan 100,
V
Algix), 3 conventional alginates(Alginoplast, Aromafine DFII, Deguprint), 2 dental stones(MG Dental Stone, New Plastone) and 2 improved dental stones(Die-Keen, New Fujirock) were selected. The conpatibility of alginate impression with gypsum was
evaluted in terms of the surface reproducibility score 1(excellent) to 4(poor) of 50§-width line on gypsum cast. The pH values of impression materials and gypsum products were measured every minute during first 30 minutes after start of mixing.
There was a difference between the surface reproducibility score of chromatic alginate (median=3) and that of conventional alginate(median=2). Gypsum products showed mean value of pH 6.86 at 5 minute and the change of pH during 30 minutes was
within
0.11.
There was a significant difference in pH values at all time after start of mix between chromatic alginate(pH 5.94) and conventional alginate(pH 7.21). All alginates showed similar pattern of pH change which had lowest pH value at about 10
minutes.
When
each impression materials was classified into 2 groups by the surface reproducibility score, the pH values of two groups were significantly different. It is concluded that the smaller the difference in pH value between the alginate and the gypsum
products, the higher compatibility would be achieved.
